Reconciling Multiple Years of Bank Statements: Where to Start

By Matthew Slomowicz·April 15, 2026·4 min read

Multiple years of unreconciled statements feels overwhelming as a single task — which is exactly why it shouldn't be approached as one.

Gather statements first, in order

Before any categorizing begins, every statement for the full period needs to be collected, in chronological order, from the bank or credit card provider directly if originals are missing.

Work chronologically, one month at a time

Reconciling the oldest month first, then moving forward, keeps running balances consistent and makes each subsequent month easier to verify against the one before it.

Breaking a multi-year backlog into discrete monthly chunks is what makes it tractable — for a bookkeeper working through it, and for an owner watching the progress.
